Teaching Jobs in Indonesia

TEFL and Indonesia: Indonesia is one of the biggest attractions for a TEFL teacher in Indonesia as it is famous for its natural beauty with many exotic beaches and lush rainforests, not to mention the diverse and rich culture. With a massive population of about 250 million people spread across 17,508 islands along the Equator, Indonesia is the world’s fourth most populous country and represents a fast growing market for English teachers. English is quite a popular language in the country and over the years, the government has been trying very hard to get the people to learn English. On the other hand, many Indonesians want to learn English and see it as a way to enhance their life and their country as well. Due to this, there is a big demand for qualified (TEFL or TESOL) and experienced ESL/EFL teachers in the country.

Job requirements: To teach English in Indonesia you will need to be well qualified with an internationally recognised degree from a reputed institute. This implies that you will require at least a TEFL or TESOL certificate as well as a degree. Most good teaching jobs in Indonesia require a minimum 120 hour TEFL certificate and a degree, and offer contracts of 20-25 hours of teaching per week. Indonesia mainly issue work visas to nationals of the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and South Africa as these are classified as English speaking nations, but teachers belonging to nations can also land with a good job prospect after an initial stage of struggle. Rules say that teachers must have a TEFL or TESOL certificate, or a BA. In addition, most jobs are on a one year contract basis.

Visa requirements: It is mandatory to have a work permit to teach English in Indonesia. If you are a native English speaking TEFL teacher, you will only receive a work permit if you come from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, South Africa, and the US. You will need to get a work visa normally known as KITAS. This will need to be arranged by the employer after they have offered you with a job contract. To obtain this visa you need to provide some documents. You will also require a passport with at least 18 months left on it, a signed CV, a list of references along with work experience, copies of your certificates and qualifications. You will also need an unusual amount of photos. All of which has to be on a red background.

However, there is one thing that you need to be aware of. Generally, teachers are given a year’s visa, but in order to leave the country, you will require an exit visa which is to be issued by the same immigration office that issued your work permit and the original visa. To get your hand on this, you will need a letter of permission from the school you were working with.

Job locations: The academic session starts mid-July and ends in mid-June. Students receive a break in December for the Muslim Eid celebration and Holiday, which changes each year. However, majority of the schools hire teachers all the year round. Most job prospects are in and around the largest island of Java, where the cities of Jakarta (the capital), Surabaya, Bandung, and Yogyakarta are located. Many desire to teach in Bali where the availability of job is competitive as it is famous for its beaches and resorts.

Salary and cost of living: The amount of money you get paid to teach in Indonesia can depend on a lot of things. It depends on what city or town you are teaching in, what school you work for and what type of teaching job you have. But as a general rule of thumb, you can expect to earn anywhere between 1000 USD to 1800 USD per month. The cost of living in Indonesia is particularly low. Even in the bigger cities, you could afford a fairly decent lifestyle and the ability to save a few dollars every month. Like most other places, more qualifications and experience means that you will earn a higher salary.
